HARIPUR: Renowned poet, district chief patron of Anjuman Taraqi Pasand Musanifeen and educationist Prof Waheed Qureshi passed away, family sources confirmed. He was 62.

He left behind a widow, two sons and a daughter. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in July this year and was under treatment when his condition worsened on Thursday evening. His family immediately shifted him to a local private hospital where he breathed his last.

His namaz-i-janaza was offered at Railway Station Ground. He was buried at his ancestral graveyard of Muhallah Motiyan on Friday morning. A large number of poets, journalists, educationists, his students and fans attended the funeral. Prof Waheed Qureshi was the author of hundreds of Urdu nazms (poems) and ghazals. He had been compiling and arranging his poetic work for publication in book form when he was diagnosed with cancer, forcing him to leave the project incomplete.

He served for many years as general secretary and president of Bazm-i-Loh-o-Qalam Haripur and later became provincial general secretary of Anjuman Taraqi Pasand Musanifeen. Until recently, he had been serving as chief patron of the organisation’s district chapter.

Prof Qureshi served in higher education department for more than 30 years before retiring as head of physics department at Government Postgraduate College for Boys, Haripur.
