TOBA TEK SINGH: Former provincial minister and ex-Senator Syeda Sughra Imam has become active in politics with an aim to contest the next general election from her native constituency in Jhang.

It is expected that she will contest against her relative, former federal minister Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat, who remained runner up in 2024 from NA-108, Jhang. He was defeated by PTI-backed Sahibzada Mahboob Sultan.

Sughra Imam is the daughter of renowned politicians Syeda Abida Hussain and Syed Fakhar Imam.

Talking to the media at her residence on Saturday, she praised the Supreme Court’s judgement declaring honour-killing offences non-compoundable, describing it as an important step towards ensuring that such cases could not be settled through compromise.

She said she had drafted and tabled the relevant legislation in 2014, which was subsequently passed in 2016 by the Senate.

She said the landmark legal reform was aimed at closing loopholes that allowed honour-killing cases to be compromised.

She also called for sustained community-awareness campaigns to challenge harmful practices and strengthen protection for women and children.
