KARACHI, July 27: The opposition leader in Karachi City Council, Saeed Ghani, on Thursday demanded of the authorities to declare the election of three council members for representation in the District Public Safety and Police Complaint Commission (PSPCC) null and void.

In his letter written separately to the Sindh High Court chief justice, Sindh chief secretary, home secretary, local govt secretary and local govt commission DG about the alleged 'irregularities' in the election held on Wednesday. Mr Ghani urged them not to issue official notification of the election results and arrange fresh polls for PSPCC under Police Order 2002.

He said that under Article 38(3) of Police Order 2002, the chairman of the district selection panel had the responsibility to conduct election of three members, including a woman, of city district council for representation in the PSPCC and under Article 41 the selection panel chairman should be a district and sessions judge.

In contradiction to the above-mentioned provisions, election of the members in Karachi City District Council held on Wednesday was conducted by the council convenor ie the city naib nazim, which was illegal, he claimed.

In addition to that, the opposition leader said, Article 38(1) c of the Police Order was also violated as every council member was asked to cast two votes, one for male and other for female candidate.--PPI
