RAWALPINDI: A convict in a murder case, who set himself on fire, succumbed to his burn injuries in the Holy Family Hospital (HFH) on Friday, police said.

Khalid Mehmood allegedly set himself on fire inside the jail on Sept 22, and almost half of his body was burnt. He was shifted to the Holy Family Hospital where he expired during treatment on Friday.

According to police, Khalid Mehmood was convicted of murdering his wife in Attock and was serving a 10-year jail term.

When Adiala Jail superintendent Sajid Baig was contacted, he said: “The convicted prisoner had set himself on fire about one month ago in the jail. At that time he was not critically burnt and was treated in the jail hospital. However, he was shifted to the HFH a week ago due to his burn injuries and died today.”

Mr Baig further said that none of his heirs had so far claimed his body.
