RAHIM YAR KHAN: A lady constable at the Islamgarh Police Station, tehsil Khanpur, was hospitalised after she made an alleged suicide attempt the other day.

Saba Kanwal was in wireless control room of the police station when she made the suicide bid by consuming sleeping pills. The station house officer (SHO) and other colleagues immediately rushed to the scene and found Kanwal and shifted her to hospital in critical condition. She was provided with immediate medical treatment and was later discharged from the hospital.

Earlier, a video statement of Kanwal also surfaced in which she was seen alleging that her parents had forcibly married her off to her paternal cousin against her will where she was brutally tortured. She received death threats from her husband and in-laws. According to Kanwal, she decided to return to her parents’ house for her safety but she faced insecurity from her brothers also. The lady constable requested the Punjab government not to hand over her body to her family in case of her death.

According to SDPO Khanpur Shahid Nazir, the lady constable had been temporarily transferred to the police headquarters.

He said the police were handling the matter with extreme caution as per Kanwal’s wishes and consent.

Police sources claimed that Kanwal had not reported any mental or physical torture or harassment on any official platform in the past.
