ISLAMABAD: Secretary of the Women Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) of the National Assembly, MNA Dr Shahida Rehmani, said on Thursday that parliament reaffirmed its commitment to raising awareness, promoting prevention and early detection of breast cancer, and advocating for accessible and quality healthcare for women across Pakistan.
The message came as Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in October 2026. In her message, Dr Shahida Rehmani said that breast cancer remained one of the most significant health challenges affecting women.
However, she added that, with greater awareness, timely screening, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, many lives can be saved. Every woman should have access to accurate information, timely medical consultation, screening facilities and affordable treatment, regardless of where she lives or her socioeconomic circumstances.
This month was an opportunity not only to spread awareness, but also to encourage women to take their health seriously, as awareness could lead to early action, and early action could save lives.
“We urge women to be attentive to changes in their bodies and to seek medical advice promptly when they have concerns. Families and communities also have an important role to play in creating an environment where women can discuss their health openly and seek care without fear or stigma.”
WPC recognised that addressing breast cancer required a comprehensive approach, from awareness and prevention to screening, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and psychosocial support. It also required stronger coordination between Parliament, government institutions, healthcare providers, civil society and development partners, she said.
“As parliamentarians, we have a responsibility to ensure that women’s health remains firmly on the policy and legislative agenda. The Caucus will continue to support initiatives that strengthen women’s access to healthcare, promote evidence-based policies and improve health outcomes for women, particularly those in underserved and remote communities.”
“On this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I call upon women, families, healthcare professionals, institutions and communities across Pakistan to join this effort,” she said.
