Boy dies as roof shed collapses at school

LAHORE: A 12-year-old boy was killed when an under-construction shed at Government Girls High School at Chowk Azam fell on him on Wednesday.

Reports said Ali Sheraz went to meet his sister at the school where he started playing with other children when an under-construction roof shed fell on him. The boy fell unconscious and had stopped breathing.

Rescue personnel immediately started cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and shifted him to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Chowk Azam where he was pronounced dead.

According to a schoolteacher, the children were playing when the boy climbed up the wall and fell, suffering a severe head injury.

Layyah Deputy Commissioner Asif Ali Dogar constituted a committee to investigate the incident.

The Layyah additional deputy commissioner (social services) has been appointed convener, while the assistant commissioner, chief executive officer of the District Education Authority, medical superintendent of THQ Hospital Chowk Azam, concerned SDPO and deputy district officer (education) have been made members.

The committee will inspect the site and record statements of the people concerned.

The committee was also directed to examine the quality of construction materials and safety arrangements at the school and identify those responsible, if any. The committee has been directed to submit its report within three days.
