CHITRAL: A two-day exhibition titled ‘Efficient Energy Solutions Expo Energywise 2026’ concluded here the other day, showcasing a wide array of innovative, solution-oriented ideas presented by local students and youth to promote clean and green energy in the climate-vulnerable mountainous region of Chitral.

Organised by the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) and funded by the European Union, the event aimed to introduce sustainable alternatives to mitigate the rapid pace of climate change in the area.

The exhibition, set up in an L-shaped layout at the Parade Ground in front of the historic Shahi Masjid, drew a large gathering of visitors over the two days including academia, students and civil society representatives. The young innovators displayed prototype models focusing on renewable energy sources, carbon sequestration, rainwater harvesting, environmental pollution control and disaster mitigation through early warning systems.

Visitors highly appreciated the confidence and readiness of the students, who eagerly explained the mechanics and practical utility of their projects.

Among the major attractions was a unique hydraulic suspension bridge designed by the students of a public sector girls’ school.

The model featured a bridge deck capable of splitting into two pieces via a hydraulic mechanism during high floods, preventing the structure from being swept away and seamlessly restoring itself once water levels receded.

A significant portion of the exhibition focused on green power generation. Students demonstrated models utilising hydropower, solar energy and the piezoelectric effect.

These projects primarily aimed at reducing reliance on fossil fuels in motor vehicles, thereby saving Chitral’s fragile ecosystem from carbon emissions.

Additionally, several models demonstrated biogas generation from cow dung and organic waste, presenting a viable alternative to firewood, which could drastically reduce deforestation driven by heating and cooking needs.
