LAHORE, July 25: Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi who reviewed flood fighting arrangments on Tuesday ordered a survey of rundown buildings and losses caused by rains in the province.
Chairing a meeting, he said a committee had been formed to make alternative arrangements for those housed in rundown buildings and wanted nazims and other departments concerned to play their part also.
According to a handout, the chief minister was satisfied that all arrangements had been finalised to counter any situation emerging from floods or monsoon rains.
He told the meeting that a police telecommunication network had been set up at all headworks and barrages to ensure a timely flood warning. He added additional resources would be made available to departments concerned to speed up relief operations. He directed WASA authorities to ensure efficient arrangements for draining rainwater.
Briefing the meeting, Secretary Relief and Crises Management Brig Syed Ghazanfar Ali said a flood control center had been set up which, in coordination with meteorological department and federal government, was making concentrated efforts. He informed the chief minister that Rs 1.4 million had been given to the families of 18 people killed so far in rain-related incidents in Lahore, Chakwal, Gujrat and Jhelum. —Staff Reporter
