PESHAWAR: The government on Tuesday suspended an SHO for misbehaving with students of the Postgraduate College of Nursing, Hayatabad, after it accepted all their demands following negotiations.

According to official sources, further action against other officials responsible for the incident is expected once an inquiry is completed. The sources said action would also be taken against the college’s principal in light of the inquiry report, which will be submitted to the chief minister by 5pm on Wednesday (today).

The Director General of Health Services and the Special Secretary Health head the inquiry committee.

The authorities have made it clear that misbehaviour with students won’t be tolerated under any circumstances and that justice and the rule of law would be ensured.

Meanwhile, health minister Khaliqur Rehman on Tuesday ordered a separate inquiry into the complaints raised by students of the nursing college.

The minister directed the relevant authorities to establish all facts and take strict action under the law and relevant rules if the inquiry found any violation, negligence, mismanagement or misconduct.

Mr Rehman urged the students to remain peaceful and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

He assured them that the authorities would examine their genuine grievances strictly on merit and in accordance with rules. He said the government would fully protect the legitimate rights of nursing students and address any proven violation or injustice according to law.

The health minister also directed police officers concerned to personally review the situation and engage all stakeholders to resolve the matter through dialogue, mutual understanding and legal procedures.

He said every citizen had the right to stage peaceful protests and voice legitimate demands, adding that protesters must also respect the law, public order and the rights of other citizens.

Mr Rehman stressed that protests should not disrupt law and order, government functions or the daily lives of other citizens.

The minister said the government would not allow injustice against students but would also ensure the rule of law, discipline, public order and protection of the academic environment.
