KARACHI: A sub-committee of the Sindh cabinet on Food has conducted a detailed review of the proposed tripartite agreement for the import of wheat and decided to request the federal government to ensure that the wheat import process is completed before December 15.

A meeting in this regard was jointly chaired by Provincial Minister for Food and convener of the committee Makhdoom Mehboob-uz-Zaman and Chief Secretary Sindh Asif Hyder Shah.

The meeting was attended by members of the sub-committee, including Provincial Ministers Jam Khan Shoro, Mukesh Kumar Chawla and Muhammad Bux Mahar, as well as Adviser to the Chief Minister Sindh Giyanchand Essrani.

The food secretary, Chief Minister’s Inspection Team chairman and other relevant officers also attended the meeting.

According to a press release, the members examined various clauses of the proposed agreement and deliberated on its administrative, financial and operational aspects.

The food minister informed the meeting that, in accordance with the decision of the Sindh cabinet, the provincial government would import 300,000 tonnes of wheat.

He stated that the government had already submitted a formal request to the Federal Ministry of National Food Security and Research regarding the import of wheat.

Following detailed deliberations, the sub-committee decided that the proposed tripartite agreement would be placed before the Sindh cabinet, along with the recommendations of the committee, for consideration and approval.

While reviewing the procurement of wheat from Passco, the meeting decided that only wheat conforming to the prescribed quality standards and fit for consumption would be purchased.

It was further decided that, of the wheat to be obtained from Passco, 100,000 metric tons would be stored in Karachi, while 90,000 metric tons would be stored in Hyderabad.

The meeting also reviewed the ongoing action against wheat hoarding across the province and decided to further intensify the drive.

The sub-committee resolved that comprehensive and indiscriminate action against wheat hoarding would continue throughout Sindh to discourage illegal stockpiling and ensure effective enforcement of the government’s decisions.
