ISLAMABAD: A judicial magistrate has approved a three-day physical remand of a private hospital chief executive officer Shaukat Ali Bangash in a case pertaining to alleged violations of the law governing human organ transplantation.
Judicial Magistrate Adnan Rashid announced the order after the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) sought a 14-day physical remand of the suspect.
According to the FIA, Mr Bangash is accused of violating provisions of the law relating to human organ transplantation. The agency told the court that its investigation had revealed alleged commercial interests in the process of human organ transplantation.
The FIA claimed that an amount of Rs13.3 million had been transferred from an agent’s account to the account of the private hospital, raising questions about the financial arrangements involved in the transplantation process.
The agency requested the court to grant 14-day physical remand of the suspect to investigate the alleged transactions and determine the role of the suspect and other individuals allegedly involved in the matter.
Counsel for Shaukat Bangash opposed the request for physical remand and pleaded with the court to discharge his client from the case, maintaining that the allegations against him were not sufficient to justify his custody.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court observed that the allegation against Mr Bangash was prima facie correct and that further investigation was required. However, the court approved a three-day physical remand and handed over the suspect to the agency for further investigation.
