KARACHI: A special federal anti-corruption court on Thursday granted bail to four suspects, including two officials of the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra), in a case pertaining to their alleged involvement in making false identity documents for Afghan nationals.

The four suspects — assistant director Imamul Haq, deputy assistant director Fayyaz Ahmed, watchman Junaid Ahmed and private agent Muhammad Umar Shah — were granted bail against a surety bond of Rs100,000 each.

Their counsel, Advocate Shaukat Hayat, argued that his clients were picked up by law enforcement agencies but their arrest was shown four days after their detention.

He contended that the prosecution had not collected any cogent evidence to establish their alleged involvement in making false computerised national identity cards (CNICs).

A special prosecutor representing the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) strongly opposed the bail applications and submitted that sufficient evidence was available to connect the applicants with the commissioning of offences.

However, the court granted the suspects post-arrest bail after hearing arguments from both sides.

The suspects were arrested on July 22 and the FIA had claimed that they were allegedly involved in preparation, processing, approval and issuance of CNICs to aliens on the basis of forged and bogus documents compromising the integrity of national registration system for their illegal pecuniary benefits.
