ABBOTTABAD: A landslide along the Sajjan Gali Road in Galiyat has put several houses at risk due to the continued subsidence of the ground close to some multi-storey buildings.
While talking to Dawn, residents have alleged that reckless and unplanned construction activities in Galiyat, allegedly carried out without due consideration of natural landscape and environmental conditions, have disturbed the stability of mountain slopes and increased the risk of landslides, particularly during the rainy season.
The recent landslide on Sajjan Gali Road has placed several houses and other structures in danger, while the ground at the affected site is reportedly continuing to slide.
The residents said that the situation was creating fear and panic among families living in the area, with concerns that further movement of the earth could result in loss of life and property.
People blame reckless, unplanned construction for looming danger
They maintained that the relevant authorities responsible for approving construction projects and monitoring development activities in Galiyat must ensure strict compliance with construction regulations.
They alleged that delayed action against illegal and unregulated construction had contributed to the worsening situation.
They warned that uncontrolled multi-storey construction in Galiyat, a region renowned for its natural beauty and tourism, poses risks not only to the environment but also to the lives and property of local communities.
Owners of the affected houses appealed to the Galiyat Development Authority (GDA) and the district administration to immediately conduct a detailed technical inspection of the affected area, determine the causes of the landslide and ground subsidence, and take emergency measures to protect families living in vulnerable locations.
They also demanded action against any illegal construction and called for strict implementation of regulations governing the approval of building plans, verification of maps and construction on natural slopes.
CHILD PROTECTION: Abbottabad Deputy Commissioner Sarmad Saleem Akram has said that no photograph or video of a child should be shared or broadcast on social media if it could reveal the child’s identity or affect their dignity, privacy or security.
Relevant institutions should maintain strict confidentiality of children’s photographs, videos and personal information, he said while speaking during a meeting of the District Child Protection Committee The meeting reviewed measures for the protection of children and prevention of child abuse, violence, exploitation and other child-related issues.
The deputy commissioner directed the authorities concerned to ensure strict implementation of child protection laws and take legal action against those involved in child abuse, exploitation or violence.
District child protection officer Mohammad Ali briefed the meeting on ongoing and new child protection cases, rehabilitation of affected children and measures being taken to provide children with a safe and secure environment.
The meeting also reviewed the formation of community-based child protection committees (CBCPCs), awareness sessions, orientation and training programmes.
