ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Norway on Friday agreed to enhance cooperation in counter-terrorism, prevention of illegal immigration, police training, and mutual legal assistance.
The understanding was reached during a meeting between Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide at the Ministry of Interior on Friday.
Both sides discussed bilateral relations and the regional situation in detail. The situation in Afghanistan and activities of banned outfits operating from there also came under discussion.
The interior minister said that Afghan soil was being continuously used for terrorism against Pakistan. “Pakistan stands like a wall between the world and terrorism. Everyone will have to work together for complete eradication of terrorism,” he said.
He said Islamabad has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against illegal immigration. “Due to Pakistan’s effective measures, illegal immigration to Europe has dropped by 47 per cent. Our efforts have also been appreciated by the European Union. Promoting legal immigration is very important for effectively curbing illegal immigration.”
He said the Norwegian foreign minister’s visit would prove to be an important milestone in taking bilateral relations forward.
The Norwegian foreign minister appreciated Pakistan’s role in de-escalating US-Iran tensions. He also praised the active role of the Pakistani community in Norway, saying it was playing a significant role in different sectors.
Minister of State for interior Tallal Chaudhry, Interior Secretary Ahmad Raza Sarwar and senior officials also attended the meeting.
