LAHORE: The board of directors of the Bank of Punjab (BoP) has approved a proposal for an equity injection of up to Rs30 billion by the Punjab government through the issuance of ordinary shares or a rights issue.

The proposed capital injection is designed to strengthen the bank’s capital base and support its future growth ambitions, according to the bank’s announcement on Monday.

The shares will be issued at Rs38.20 per ordinary share; if the prevailing market price of the bank’s ordinary shares at the time of issuance is higher, the issue price will be the prevailing market price plus a 5 per cent premium, says a notice to the stock exchange.

The suggested price therefore serves as the floor price for the issuance.

Commenting on the approval, Zafar Masud, President & CEO of the bank, said: “This capital injection is a vote of confidence by the government in BOP’s strategy and its people. It equips the bank to scale the priority-sector franchises we have built — from SME and agriculture to affordable housing and digital lending.”

Over the past several years, BOP has substantially expanded its balance sheet, strengthening its financial performance and building leading market positions in segments most vital to Pakistan’s economy.

The bank today ranks as the country’s top bank in SME, agriculture and affordable housing finance, women’s leadership, credit card issuance and digital lending, while steadily deepening its presence in export-oriented commercial and corporate banking.
