RAWALPINDI: A police constable and his two alleged accomplices were arrested from the office of the City Police Officer (CPO) on Wednesday after an inquiry found allegations of kidnapping and extortion against them to be substantiated.

A case was subsequently registered against the three accused.

The inquiry was ordered by City Police Officer Hassan Mushtaq Sukhera after a citizen complained that he had been picked up by the police, threatened with implication in a drug-related case and released only after paying Rs60,000.

A police spokesman said the CPO took notice of the complaint and ordered an inquiry.

Following the inquiry, the constable and his two private associates were arrested from the CPO office after the allegations were found to be true. A case of kidnapping and extortion was registered against them, and they were taken into custody.

According to the complainant, the constable and his two associates abducted him after threatening to implicate him in a criminal case, extorted money from him and later released him.

The constable was posted at Chaklala Police Station. CPO Hassan Mushtaq Sukhera said corruption and misuse of authority would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

He said police officers and officials must perform their duties responsibly, adding that there was zero tolerance for corruption or mistreatment of citizens.

A police spokesman said the case had been registered with Chaklala Police Station and that a challan supported by evidence would be submitted to the court.
