Five-day working week restored for public, private schools and colleges

KARACHI: Schools and colleges across Sindh will now observe a five-day working week, from Monday to Friday, after the provincial government reversed its decision to hold classes six days a week.

The change was announced in two notifications separately issued by the Sindh school education and literacy and college education departments on Wednesday.

The notifications said that “with the approval of the competent authority, it is hereby notified that all public and private educational institutions shall observe a five-day working week, from Monday to Friday, with immediate effect and until further orders”.

Last week, the school and college education departments notified a six-day working week — Monday to Saturday — for all public and private educational institutions under their administration control.

Later, the government had allowed all private schools in the province to decide their weekly teaching and working days according to their own schedules and convenience, clarifying that the earlier directive would not apply to privately managed schools.

On March 31, the Sindh government had announced that Saturday and Sunday would be “off” days at educational institutions, as part of the austerity and fuel conservation measures adopted to deal with the economic impact of the US-Israeli war on Iran.
