ISLAMABAD: An anti-terrorism court on Tuesday sent 88 people arrested in connection with a protest held to express solidarity with protesters of Kashmir to jail on judicial remand for an identification parade.

Judge Abdul Ghafoor Kakar passed the order after the police produced all 88 suspects before the court following their arrest in a case registered at Shalimar police station.

During the proceedings, the investigating officer requested the court to send the accused to jail for an identification parade, stating that the process was necessary to establish the identity of the suspects in relation to the allegations levelled against them.

Accepting the prosecution’s request, the court directed the jail authorities to conduct the identification parade within 14 days. It further ordered the investigating officer to ensure completion of the process and produce all the accused before the court again after the stipulated period.

According to the prosecution, the suspects were arrested in connection with a demonstration held in support of Kashmir. The police have booked them under various provisions of the law in the case registered at Shalimar police station. However, the specific charges invoked in the first information report were not disclosed during the court proceedings.

The identification parade is considered an important stage of the investigation, enabling witnesses to identify the accused before the trial formally begins. Following the completion of the exercise, the investigating agency is expected to place the findings before the court to determine the future course of the proceedings.

The case will now be taken up after the completion of the identification parade, when the police are expected to present the accused before the anti-terrorism court in compliance with the judicial directions.
