LAHORE: At least five people died and nine others were injured in rain-related incidents across Punjab on Monday while the monsoon rains inundated roads and low-lying neighbourhoods in several cities, disrupting traffic and causing urban flooding.
According to a Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) report, a man was killed and another injured when a house collapsed in Uch Sharif, Bahawalpur, while two children drowned in Khushab. Two persons were injured in separate roof collapse incidents in Mandi Bahauddin and Lodhran. The report also recorded a house damaged in Bahawalpur.
According to Rescue 1122 Bahawalpur, Abdul Hameed (55) died when the shade under which he was sleeping collapsed due to rain at Lallowali Mori near Uch Sharif. His fellow Muhammad Sajid (28) suffered injuries. In the second roof collapse incident at Adda Sokar minor canal in Yazman, a minor girl, Shamim, suffered injuries.Heavy rain lashed Lahore for several hours on Monday, causing urban flooding in many parts of the city.
According to Wasa, the city received an average rainfall of 24.8mm. The highest rainfall of 66.4mm was recorded at Wasa Head Office Gulberg, followed by 58.8mm at Shadipura, 55.6mm at Mughalpura, 46.4mm at Mannawan and 45.6mm at Johar Town. Other areas receiving significant rainfall included Tajpura (38.4mm), Farrukhabad (21.8mm), Kahna (20mm), Nishtar Town (19.8mm) and Airport (15mm).
Heavy rain lashes Lahore, Faisalabad, Okara, Gujrat
Rainwater, ranging from one to one-and-a-half feet deep, accumulated in Township, Kacha Jail Road, Haider Road and Quaid-i-Azam Industrial Estate, submerging several major roads. Long queues of vehicles formed on inundated roads as commuters struggled to reach their destinations, while residents in affected localities were forced to use alternative routes.
Urban flooding was also reported in several other cities. Faisalabad received the heaviest downpour, recording 103mm. Water accumulated up to 23 inches at Chaudhry Flour Mills Chowk, 20 inches at Lower Canal on Jaranwala Road, 19 inches at Saad Bela (People’s Colony No 1), 17 inches each at Riaz Shahid Chowk and Iqbal Stadium, and 15 inches at several locations, including Lasani Pulli, Millat Chowk, 66-Feet Bazaar Nishatabad and D Ground.
OKARA: During the heavy rain, a woman was buried to death while her six months old baby remained unhurt as the roof of their house collapsed at locality Adda Kalason Hameed on the Hujra Road near Qila Sadha Singh.
As per Rescue 1122, the girder and bamboo roof caved in, burying 26-year-old Nadia and her infant son, Anas, under the debris. The villagers and Rescue 1122 recovered them from the debris but Nadia had breathed her last when her body was found.
GUJRAT: Five persons were injured when the roof of a cattle shed caved in at Doga Colony in Kharian city.
The injured included two women and as many teenage boys. At least four cattle heads were also injured in the incident. The rescue officials shifted the injured people to Kharian Tehsil Headquarters Hospital.
In Gujrat, the maximum rainfall was 68.8mm with water accumulating between two and five inches at major locations, including Railway Road, Ghareeb Pura Road, Bhimber Road and Jalalpur Jattan Road.
Mandi Bahauddin recorded 56.8mm of rainfall at the Wasa Laboratory gauge and 30mm at the Wasa Head Office. Water accumulated up to eight inches on Jail Road, four inches at College Chowk and Committee Chowk, and two inches at several other locations after the rain.
In Jhelum, Wasa reported only 0.87mm of average rainfall.
