DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Two policemen were martyred when terrorists ambushed a police party in Shah Alam Mor area of Daraban Kalan here on Friday.

Dera Regional Police Officer Ghulam Mubashir Mekan said that the attack took place in the jurisdiction of Choudhwan police station, where terrorists opened fire on a police patrol.

He said the incident followed the shooting of a resident, Adnan, on Thursday night.

Mr Mekan said unidentified gunmen had attempted to stop two men travelling on a motorcycle in the Choudhwan area, shooting dead one of them, identified as Adnan.

He said the killing triggered protests on Friday, with residents blocking the Daraban Road.

Police later negotiated with the protesters, after which the road was reopened to traffic.

Mr Mekan said that armed assailants lying in wait opened fire on the four policemen returning from the protest site near Shah Alam Mor.

As a result of the attack, assistant sub-inspector Faqir Hussain and head constable Wazir Khan were martyred, while the remaining personnel escaped unharmed.

Police and security forces rushed to the scene, shifted the bodies to the hospital, and launched a search operation to trace the attackers. Police said an investigation was underway.

Meanwhile, the funeral prayers for two policemen were offered with full state honours at Ejaz Shaheed Police Lines on Friday.

A smartly turned-out police contingent presented a guard of honour to the coffins wrapped in the national flag.

Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi condemned the attack and sought a report from senior police authorities.

The governor directed officials to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured personnel and paid tribute to the fallen policemen, describing them as “the nation’s heroes” whose sacrifices were acknowledged across the country.

TWO KILLED: Two members of a local peace committee were killed in a targeted attack, and two children were injured in a suspected quadcopter attack in Upper South Waziristan tribal district, police and local sources said.

The first incident occurred in the Badar Nazarkhel area of Ladha tehsil, where, according to local sources, a suspected quadcopter dropped explosives near a residential house. The explosions injured two children.

The injured were identified as Mohammad Yaseen Mehsud, 8, and Kulsoom, 9.

They were shifted to the hospital. Police said the circumstances surrounding the suspected quadcopter attack were being investigated.

In a separate incident, unidentified assailants opened fire in Kotkai Bazaar of Sararogha tehsil, killing two members of a local peace committee.

Police identified the deceased as Sardar Sarhadi and Ahmed. According to police officials, the attackers fled the scene. Police said the motive behind the attack could not be immediately established.

Meanwhile, two persons were injured when terrorists targeted elders of Ahmadzai Peace Committee in the Barghanato area of the Wazir subdivision in Bannu district.

The injured were shifted to the hospital, the police said.
