HYDERABAD: Sindh Governor Syed Mohammad Nehal Hashmi inaugurated the 283rd annual urs of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai on Wednesday by laying a floral wreath at the mystic poet’s shrine in Bhitshah.
Arriving in the town early in the morning, the governor offered prayers for the progress and prosperity of the country and paid glowing tributes to the 18th-century Sufi saint. Speaking to reporters, he noted that Bhittai had consistently preached peace, love and brotherhood, asserting that the universality of the poet’s message remains acutely relevant to contemporary society in fostering national integration and harmony.
“We can lay the foundation of a prosperous Pakistan by adhering to Bhittai’s message,” Governor Hashmi stated, emphasising that the urs is not merely a spiritual or cultural event, but a day of reaffirmation of the nation’s mystic values and cultural identity. He added that the saint’s poetry would continue to inspire generations.
The governor highlighted that the people of Sindh have long drawn strength from Shah Jo Risalo, which he described as a literary and spiritual treasure trove. He noted that the text has been translated into various international languages, allowing a global audience to connect with the mystic’s philosophy. He observed that while mankind was often embroiled in conflicts, Bhittai preached harmony, adding that the presence of devotees from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds at the shrine stands as a testament to inter-faith harmony.

Following his visit to Bhitshah, Governor Hashmi travelled to Hala to offer prayers at the shrine of Hazrat Ghausul Haq Makhdoom Nooh Sarwar. During his tour of the Matiari district, he met with local residents, community elders and political figures. At Bhanoth, he was warmly received at the residence of Shah Zaman Shah, where elders presented him with a traditional Sindhi ajrak and cap.
Later, addressing journalists at Mashallah House in Hala, the Sindh governor asserted that a strong and prosperous society must be built on tolerance, mutual respect and the rule of law. He praised former prime minister Nawaz Sharif for laying the foundation of Pakistan’s modern infrastructure through the construction of motorways, grid stations and airports, while practicing politics grounded in public service. He urged the younger generation of political leaders to emulate Sharif’s steadfastness and commitment to national interest.
Governor Hashmi reiterated that the teachings of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai promote humanity and service to mankind, adding that success in both worldly and spiritual life lies in patience, integrity and adherence to principles.
Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan also visited the shrine on Wednesday to pay his respects. Describing his participation in the annual celebrations as a matter of great honour, Governor Khan laid a chadar on the grave, offered fateha and listened to Shah Jo Raag.
Addressing the media, the Punjab governor stressed that Bhittai’s universal message of peace and love remains a beacon of light for future generations, adding that it is incumbent upon society to connect the youth with Sufi thought.
Turning to political matters, Governor Khan expressed concern over delays in the announcement of electoral results in certain constituencies of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). He emphasised that transparent and timely elections are vital for strengthening democracy, adding that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has consistently championed the rights of the underprivileged.
The Punjab governor also dismissed criticisms regarding Sindh’s road infrastructure, stating that his own journey from Nawabshah to Bhitshah on well-constructed roads disproved claims that the province had been neglected. However, he voiced serious concern over mounting inflation, high electricity tariffs and the economic hardships facing the public.
Speaking alongside him, Sindh Minister for Culture and Tourism Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah stated that Bhittai’s philosophy is an asset for the entire province and humanity at large, noting its particular relevance to resolving contemporary challenges in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other regions.
Minister Shah thanked the Punjab governor for attending the urs, terming his presence a vital symbol of inter-provincial harmony. Both dignitaries later attended the traditional Sugharan ji Kachehri (gathering of folk poets) at H.T. Sorley Hall in Bhitshah, where Minister Shah reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to preserving Sindh’s centuries-old cultural traditions.
