LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Thursday granted post-arrest bail on medical grounds to an alleged quack in a case of causing irreparable health damage to a minor boy by conducting a botched circumcision.

Sabzazar police had registered an FIR on May 25, 2024, on a complaint by Atif Butt, an overseas Pakistani, against the petitioner/suspect, Iftikhar Ahmad, and others.

The suspect approached the high court for a bail on medical grounds after a judicial magistrate and a sessions court denied him the relief.

The petitioner’s counsel argued that the case against his client was lodged after an unexplained delay of one year and five months. He said such an extraordinary delay rendered the prosecution’s story doubtful and entitled the petitioner to the concession of bail under settled law.

He maintained that the petitioner had been falsely implicated in the case due to ulterior motives.

The counsel pointed out that the petitioner was suffering from advanced Parkinson’s disease requiring specialised medical treatment which was not available in jail.

He said the medical reports issued by the District Jail, Lahore, and subsequent examinations at Services Hospital confirmed the petitioner’s deteriorating health and doctors recommended specialised neurological care to the patient. He said the required medical care could not be provided in prison and the continued incarceration of the petitioner would endanger his life.

After hearing the arguments, the court allowed the suspect’s bail petition, relying on medical reports. The court directed the petitioner to furnish bail bonds worth Rs500,000.
