Countrywide rains likely in first week of July, says PMD

RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Monday said that monsoon rains in the country are likely to start in the first week of July.

The PMD said that a westerly wave may enter upper parts of the country from June 30. It said that moist currents from the Arabian Sea are continuously penetrating eastern and central parts of the country. Moist currents from the Bay of Bengal are expected to reach the upper parts on July 2.

Under the influence of this weather system, scattered rains and windstorm/thundershower (with isolated heavy rains) are expected in Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, Mirpur from July 1 to July 6.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Scattered rains and windstorm/thundershower are expected in Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Nowshera, Charsadda, Karak, Tank, Lakki Marwat, Swabi, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Kurram, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Mardan, Hangu, Waziristan, Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan from July 1 to July 5.

Punjab

Scattered rains and windstorm are expected in Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Faisalabad, Khushab, Sargodha, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal from July 1 to July 6, while in Sahiwal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Pakpattan, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot, Okara, Kasur, Noor Pur Thal, Bhakkar, Layyah Mianwali, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, D.G. Khan, Multan, Khanewal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh and Rajanpur from July 3 to July 5.

Gilgit-Baltistan

In Gilgit-Baltistan, rains accompanied by thunderstorm are likely in Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, Shigar from July 1 to July 5.

Balochistan

Rains are expected in Zhob, Sherani, Kohlu, Naseerabad, Harnai, Sibbi, Barkhan and Dera Bugti areas of Balochistan from July 1 to July 4.

Sindh

Rains and windstorm/thundershower are likely in Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu, Jacobabad, Shaheed Benazirabad, Kashmore, Shikarpur, Ghotki, Khairpur, Qambar Shahdadkot and Naushahro Feroze on July 3 and July 4.

Landslide, flooding

The PMD said that windstorm and lightning may damage weak structures (solar panels, electric poles, bill boards etc) during the period.

It warned that landslides may occur in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Balt­istan and Kashmir from July 2 to July 6.

It said there is possibility of flash-flooding in local streams and Nullahs of Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and hill torrents of D. G. Khan from July 2 to July 5.

It advised tourists and travelers to remain extra cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during the period.

It advised farmers to manage their crop activities keeping in view the weather conditions and take care of their livestock as well.

It asked all authorities concerned to stay vigilant and take necessary steps to avoid any untoward situation during the rains.
