ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Iran on Thursday agreed to fully activate the Pakistan-Iran Joint Transport Committee and take coordinated measures to resolve transport and logistics issues on a priority basis to enhance bilateral trade and regional connectivity.

The understanding was reached during a high-level meeting between Iran’s Minister of Roads, Urban Development and Transport Farzaneh Sadegh, and a Pakistani delegation led by Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, during the former’s visit to Pakistan, the ministry said in a statement.

The meeting focused on regional connectivity, trade promotion and enhancing bilateral cooperation.

The Pakistani delegation included Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi, Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan and Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry.

Both sides pledge to activate Joint Transport Committee

During the meeting, Aleem Khan expressed deep satisfaction over the restoration of peace in the region and commended the resilience and determination of the Iranian people.

He emphasised that road and rail connectivity between Pakistan and Iran would be further strengthened in the future, noting that robust land links are essential for expanding trade opportunities between the two neighbouring countries.

Both delegations held detailed discussions on various proposals aimed at improving bilateral logistics and agreed to fully activate the Pakistan-Iran Joint Transport Committee.

The minister assured the Iranian delegation that all transport-related issues between the two countries would be addressed and resolved on a priority basis.

Iranian Minister Farzaneh Sadegh expressed her sincere appreciation for Pakistan’s positive and constructive role in helping de-escalate regional tensions and facilitate the path toward a peace agreement.

She stated that Iran highly values the support and cooperation extended by its Pakistani brothers. Ms Sadegh also raised specific concerns regarding the clearance of trucks and containers at the border.

Senior officials from both sides attended the meeting, and the two countries agreed to undertake joint measures for the swift resolution of all outstanding issues along the Pakistan-Iran border.
