SWABI: The police killed three outlaws, wanted in murder and other cases, in an encounter here on Wednesday, a senior police official said.

Speaking to reporters, district police officer Waqas Rafiq said a police party raided a place in the Gadwad Abad area near the district headquarters on a tip-off. However, he said the outlaws opened fire, triggering a gunfight.

Mr Rafiq said the outlaws also threw a hand grenade. He said after the crossfire stopped, the police found the bodies of three outlaws. He said two accomplices of the deceased managed to escape.

The DPO said the outlaws belonged to an organised group that was involved in serious crimes such as murders, attempted murders, extortion, kidnapping, drug trafficking, and firing on the police, creating an atmosphere of fear in the area.

He identified the deceased as Aamir Khan, Zohaib Khan and Umar Said. He added that cases were registered against Aamir in different police stations under various sections of the Pakistan Penal Code and the Explosives Act.

The DPO said Zohaib had six cases registered against him, including drug trafficking, attempted murder, and firing on the police, while Umar was involved in firing on the police and other crimes.

He said the police had launched efforts to trace the fleeing men.

He said a hand grenade, three Kalashnikovs and hundreds of cartridges were recovered from the scene.

DPO Rafiq said action against criminal elements will continue without discrimination to protect public life and property.

The bodies were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital for autopsy.

Meanwhile, a teacher of a government school was injured in a firing incident in Ahad Khan Kalay here on Wednesday, the police said.

They said the accused wanted to marry the daughter of the teacher, but he refused to do so.

The injured person was taken to Bacha Khan Teaching Hospital.

The police registered a case against the suspect.
