PESHAWAR: Khyber Teaching Hospital has started renal transplants, thus becoming the second public sector health facility in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to do so after the Institute of Kidney Diseases, Hayatabad Medical Complex.
The first successful free kidney transplant was performed here the other day, marking a new era in advanced medical care within the province, according to a press release issued here.
According to the hospital administration, the groundbreaking procedure involved two brothers, where a healthy donor voluntarily donated one of his kidneys, giving his sibling a new lease on life. Both donor and recipient have recovered successfully and are in stable condition.
Speaking to the media, Project Director and Dean of Khyber Medical College & KTH, Prof Mahmud Aurangzeb, congratulated the entire transplant team on this historic success.
He stated that this achievement was not only a proud moment for KTH but for the entire province. He also acknowledged the chief minister for his unwavering support, emphasising that the provision of free and quality healthcare reflected a strong public service vision, and this transplant programme served as a beacon of hope for patients across the province.
Transplant surgeon Dr Shahid Ahmed Khan shared that the patient had severe renal failure and multiple complications. After detailed medical evaluation, a kidney transplant was recommended. The patient’s real brother stepped forward as a donor. Following comprehensive testing and cross-matching, the transplant was successfully completed, and the patient is now recovering rapidly.
Both the donor and recipient expressed deep gratitude to the government, the hospital administration, doctors, nurses, and the entire transplant team, stating that their exceptional care and professionalism had given them a renewed life.
