BZU sans registrar in SC order breach

LAHORE: In violation of a Supreme Court direction, the Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU), Multan, has been working without a regular registrar for the last one-and-a-half years, creating legal and administrative problems for the varsity.

According to a BZU notification, Additional Registrar Ejaz Ahmad was given the charge of registrar’s post on Jan 1, 2025 “till further orders.”

Earlier, Institute of Zoology Director Prof Dr Aleem Khan had been the acting charge as registrar till December 31, 2024.

Punjab Higher Education Department (HED) had instructed the university on November 26, 2024 to comply with the Supreme Court’s judgment, particularly Paragraph 39, which explicitly provides that vacant tenured positions in public sector universities “must not be held for more than six months on an acting-charge basis.”

Acting on the SC’s directions, Dr Aleem Khan was removed from the post and Additional Registrar Ejaz Ahmad was given the additional charge of the post.

However, despite passage of one-and-a-half years, the university could not appoint a regular registrar, in violation of the SC orders.

Meanwhile, the faculty and administrative staff of the university have raised concerns over the situation, demanding appointment of a regular registrar immediately, saying the office’s functioning on acting charge basis was creating legal and administrative problems for the university.
