• NA adopts resolution lauding Islamabad’s role in US-Iran deal
• Delegation to represent Pakistan at Khamenei’s funeral, Pezeshkian accepts invitation to visit Pakistan soon
ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Friday unanimously adopted a resolution congratulating and appreciating the leadership of Iran and the United States on the “successful completion and signing of a historic peace deal”, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told the house that Pakistan had earned global respect after mediating the agreement between the two countries.
“Whereas the National Assembly of Pakistan notes with immense satisfaction and pride the landmark diplomatic breakthrough in the form of cessation of hostilities, and signing of an agreement on a framework for peace and stability between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the resolution stated.
“Whereas the House recognises the negative fallout of the conflict for regional peace and stability, as well as for the economic stability and energy security of … countries across the globe,” it added.
The resolution, presented by Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, appreciated PM Shehbaz, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Chief of Defence Staff and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir and the entire team engaged in negotiations.
The House acknowledged that “their sincere and tireless efforts positioned Pakistan as a trusted neutral mediator on the global stage”.
Khamenei’s funeral
The NA continued its general discussion on the budget after PM Shehbaz told lawmakers that the Iranian president had invited Pakistan to attend the funeral of assassinated supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on July 3 and 4.
He announced that a Pakistani delegation would attend the funeral in Tehran.
The premier also shared that he had spoken on the phone with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday evening.
During the call, he said, the Iranian president repeatedly expressed gratitude to him and the entire Pakistani nation for standing by Iran during difficult times.
“I invited him to Pakistan. I told him the entire nation is ready to give him a warm welcome and tell the world that Iran and Pakistan are not just neighbouring countries, but [brotherly] countries,” he said.
He added that the Iranian president had accepted the invitation and would visit Pakistan soon to express his gratitude to its people.
The prime minister also said that while Iran’s leadership had participated in negotiations to end the conflict with “great dignity and seriousness”, US President Donald Trump and his administration had also played their part.
“Pakistan and Iran will closely cooperate in the times to come and as a result of the ceasefire, economic prosperity will be witnessed in the region,” he said.
“While the people of Pakistan made every humanly possible effort to save the economy, the federal government immediately spent Rs128 billion to bring inflation down to the lowest possible level,” he recalled while highlighting recent economic challenges.
“But now,” he added, “the sun of progress and prosperity is about to rise.”
In this regard, he thanked the provincial governments for “extending their full support and leaving no stone unturned in providing relief to the people”.
The prime minister noted that Pakistan had earned global respect after mediating between the US and Iran.
“Several countries have sought such respect for centuries, but could not get the respect that God has blessed Pakistan with today. From Japan to Saudi Arabia, from Kuala Lumpur to Casablanca and from Mexico to India, if any country’s name is reverberating with respect and honour, it is Pakistan’s,” he said.
He urged both sides of the aisle to send a collective message to the world that despite “our political differences”, we would always remain “united for national causes”.
“It is an undeniable truth, whether we like it or not, that the most significant role in this is of Field Marshal Asim Munir, who worked tirelessly day and night, sacrificing his sleep for the last two to three months, to restore peace,” he said.
The premier also congratulated Opposition Leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and other allies of the ruling PML-N.
He extended gratitude to countries that contributed to peace efforts, particularly naming Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and China.
‘Pledge to support democracy’
Following the prime minister’s speech, Opposition Leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai acknowledged the significance of the agreement and lauded the efforts of all those involved.
He added it was not a day for slandering each other, but noted that it was unfair for speeches by opposition members to be “silenced” on state media.
“[PM] Shehbaz Bhai, we will extend unconditional support for the supremacy of parliament and democracy,” he said.
Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani later highlighted the key features of the budget for 2026-27. Meanwhile, members of the opposition and allied parties continued their criticism of the budget.
