JOHANNESBURG: The South African Police killed at least 35 persons and injured 220 others today [June 17] and yesterday when it opened fire on black students, demonstrating against the compulsory learning of Afrikaan language in schools. The killings took place in Soweto, a Johannesburg suburb. These killings are the worst incident of its kind in South Africa since the Sharpeville shootings 16 years ago when Police killed 69 blacks. — News agencies

He said: “The Government has no intention of going back on those commitments made by previous governments to U.K. passport-holders. Neither will it go back on the belief that those entitled to be here are entitled to be joined by their families.” Statistics issued by the Home Office yesterday [June 16] showed a sharp increase in the number of Commonwealth immigrants entering Britain and precipitated demands by Conservative [MPs] that immigration be stopped.
