HYDERABAD: The Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro, has formally objected to the conduct of the Sindh Information Commission (SIC) which, it said, made the varsity to act in breach of its own rules and privacy policy.
LUMHS registrar is said to have written to the Sindh information secretary about the June 8 episode in which SIC Commissioners Riaz Ahmed Dayo and Mohammad Saleem Khan inspected personal and confidential records of its three female MBBS students.
He said that an individual, Abdul Khalique Rajput, had earlier approached the university to seek access to the records but was denied.
The information pertained to personal and confidential records of students and the university management is not supposed to provide any personal information or academic credentials to any individual. Therefore, he [Mr Rajput] was denied such information. He then approached the provincial ombudsman with complaint against the LUMHS. The ombudsman also did not accept his request, the registrar said.
However, on his complaint, the SIC team visited the university on June 8 and inspected the record. Still, said the registrar, the university management cooperated with the SIC members and provided the requisite records, information and relevant documents. They were also briefed about applicable laws, rules regulations and policies governing admission, verification of credentials and protection of confidential information about students.
“It is observed with serious concern that subsequently the matter was publicised and projected on various social media platforms and electronic news channels in a manner that appears prejudicial, misleading and detrimental to the reputation and integrity of the university. Such publicity has created unnecessary confusion amongst students, parents and general public and has adversely affected the image of this prestigious public sector institution,” wrote the registrar.
He has sought necessary proceedings deemed appropriate under relevant government rules, regulations and applicable legal framework to safeguard legitimate interests of the university.
