MANSEHRA: As the rains lashed Kaghan and Siren valleys on Saturday, floodwaters swept away a young girl and damaged several houses.

Also, rivers and streams swelled and a key road linking dozens of villages with the main highway was blocked by landslides.

“We have dispatched our rescue teams to Siren Valley after receiving a distress call that a 15-year-old girl has been swept away by gushing floodwater in the Nawazabad area,” Rescue 1122 district emergency officer Ibrar Ali told reporters on Saturday.

The heavy rain, which began at around 4pm across upper parts of Hazara Division, continued for the rest of the day.

The rains caused havoc at high-altitude parts of Mansehra district, including Kaghan, Siren and Konsh valleys, causing widespread disruption.

The Siren and Kunhar rivers, along with several streams, swelled dangerously. Rescue 1122 teams to rush to residential areas and tourist destinations to warn residents and visitors against approaching riverbanks.

“We have also deployed our teams, along with police personnel, to warn families living near streams and rivers to remain cautious, as heavy torrents are flowing downstream from the mountainous areas following the rainfall,” he said.

The main road linking Mansehra with upper parts of Siren Valley was blocked to all sorts of traffic in the Nawazabad area due to floodwaters and landslides.

Residents said the watermills were also inundated and trees were uprooted in parts of the Siren valley.

The floodwaters also inundated sections of the Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhad Road in the Mahandri area.

“We have deployed teams in Bugarmang, Balakot and other affected areas where rainwater has flooded roads and rivers have reached dangerous levels,” Rescue 1122 official Ali said.

He said the reports had also been received about cloudbursts that brought large boulders and rocks onto roads and into populated areas in Siren Valley and other mountainous parts of the district.

“We have placed all emergency response teams on high alert to cope with any untoward situation caused by the monsoon rains, which have affected several parts of the district,” he said.
