LAHORE: The Punjab Wildlife & Parks Department is undertaking measures to conserve rare and endangered wildlife species in the province.

The secretary of forests and wildlife has announced the establishment of the Panjnad Indus River Dolphin Wildlife Sanctuary for the protection of the Indus dolphin and issued a notification in this regard.

According to the notification, the secretary declared the area of the Indus River from Jampur, Bait Lundi Pitafi to Guddu Barrage as the Panjnad Indus River Dolphin Wildlife Sanctuary until further orders.

This initiative will ensure the protection of the endangered Indus dolphin, along with other wildlife species in the area.

It is noteworthy that the Indus dolphin is a unique species of dolphin found only in the Indus River system and is locally known as “Bhulan.”

It is functionally blind from birth, which is why it is also referred to as the blind dolphin. It is mostly found in the lower reaches of the Indus River.
