ISLAMABAD: Two persons, including a worker of a fishing contractor, were booked over poaching of flamingos in Rawal Lake in response to the complaint lodged by deputy director Fisheries ICT Ghufran Shahzad.

According to the FIR, an identified and some unidentified locals along with a man working with fishing contractor were found involved in the illegal hunting/killing of the flamingos, resting at the lake.

The act of illegal hunting/killing of flamingos is a serious crime as per provisions of Islamabad Nature Conservation and Wildlife Management Act 2024 and Fisheries Ordinance 1961.

An official of the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) said that we also have evidence that poachers also killed other medium sized water birds such as the magnificent coots and moorhens.

Sighting of flamingos in the lake was rare in this season, and their killing is an ecological tragedy, the official said.

The police said that after registration of the case they started the investigation.

The complainant nominated two persons, one is a resident of the Banigala and the other was working with the fishing contractor.

Efforts are on to trace and arrest the nominated accused and the other unidentified locals who are involved in the hunting of the birds.
