KARACHI: A judicial magistrate on Friday remanded a man in police custody for two days in a case pertaining to the killing of his wife in Orangi Town.

The investigating officer of the case brought Asghar Ali, 64, before the judicial magistrate (West), seeking his physical custody for interrogation.

The IO informed the court that the suspect had allegedly confessed to his crime before the police. He added that a day earlier, the suspect surrendered himself to the police station and stated that he had murdered his 58-year-old wife — Asma Begum — by hitting an iron rod on her head inside their home in Sector 11 ½ near Abu Bakr Masjid Orangi Town over a domestic dispute.

The IO further stated that he needed the suspect’s physical custody to interrogate as well as to check his previous criminal record.

After hearing the IO, the court granted two days’ physical custody of the suspect and directed the IO to produce him at the next hearing along with a progress report.

A case was registered at the Iqbal Market police station on a complaint lodged by the state under Section 302 (murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code after the victim’s children refused to register a case against their father.

According to the FIR, the suspect surrendered before the police and stated that he had two sons employed in private companies and two married daughters.

He told the police that he had a dispute with his wife in the early hours of June 4 and, in a fit of anger, allegedly killed her by hitting her with an iron rod.

The police said that after the suspect’s confession to the police, Inspector Ahmed Ali Chandio visited the crime scene, where the victim’s body was found inside the house. The corpse was later shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

The FIR added that in the presence of witnesses, the suspect was officially arrested and that the crime weapon was seized and sent for forensic analysis.
