PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed on Wednesday said that the province’s police faced a completely different situation compared to other provinces and were fighting the “war of the entire country”.

“The number of police personnel martyred and those who sustained injuries in the war against terrorism is more in KP than other provinces’. Our police will ensure peace that is required for the province and the country, and we will achieve our objectives if we continue [the fight with] the same spirit,” the police chief said during a ceremony held here for handing over plot allotment letters to the families of the martyred police personnel.

Mr Hameed said that the day he assumed the charge as the province’s police chief, he was informed that the force’s salaries as well as the package for the martyred personnel was less compared to the one prevalent in other provinces.

He said since the police in KP were fighting on the frontline against terrorism, they’re fighting for the entire country, necessitating enhancing that compensation amount than the one offered in other provinces.

The IGP said he took up the issue with authorities and ensured the KP police’s salaries are on a par with the police of other provinces and the Shuhada Package is enhanced.

He said the move was meant to encourage relatives of the police personnel who laid down their lives.

“This is our collective responsibility to ensure that no one is left behind. They [relatives of the martyred police personnel] should not feel that the department is not taking care of them,” he said.

Mr Hameed said that besides many other things, the department also included a plot for the family of every martyred police official.

He said that the police department would do more for fallen personnel.

The IGP said that the summary, which the department moved, proposed aid to those families, which wanted to construct homes anywhere.

He said that in southern districts, the terrorists had been targeting family members of the martyred police personnel as well and that the department had also moved a summary so that their losses could be compensated.

“The reason for doing all this is that our [police] force has been fighting the war of the entire country with courage. This is our fight and we will do anything which we can do,” he said.

Mr Hameed said the KP government never refused any proposal from the department, while the federal government was also funding police facilities.

He said that the military also supported family members of the martyred police personnel and planned to announce a package, including a medical facility.

Earlier, provincial minister for housing Dr Amjad Ali said that last year, he received a call from the chief minister who wanted to allot plots to families of the martyred police personnel of different ranks, and sought data.

He added that he later collected data of some 500 reserved plots and the same details were shared with the chief minister and IGP Hameed.

“This [plots] cannot compensate for the human loss but at least it will provide shelter [to families of martyred personnel],” he said.

The minister said last year, the government launched the Apna Ghar housing scheme and provided Rs1.5 million interest-free loans, while family members of the martyred personnel would be provided with the same loan on priority.

He said that it was a privilege for the provincial government and his department to facilitate family members of the martyred personnel and that the housing department had been working on including personnel of other law-enforcement agencies in that scheme.

The minister said 67 out of a total of 500 plots were allotted in the provincial capital under government schemes, while families of the police officials, belonging to other districts, would receive the same in their native districts.
