PESHAWAR: Peshawar Institute of Cardiology has achieved another historic milestone by successfully performing Pakistan’s first endoscopic cardiac surgery for the treatment of a heart valve disease and a hole in the heart.

Using advanced camera-assisted technology and modern surgical techniques, a complex cardiac procedure was successfully performed on a 37-year-old patient, who is recovering well, a press release said.

According to the surgeons at the Peshawar Institute of Cardiology (PIC), the advanced endoscopic procedure was carried out through small cuts with the help of cameras, without opening the chest. This minimally invasive approach helps reduce pain, blood loss and recovery time for patients. Dr. Mujeeb Dawar, Paeds Cardiac Surgeon at PIC, stated that PIC has emerged as a leading institution in Pakistan for introducing advanced and minimally invasive cardiac treatments. He added that the success was made possible through excellent teamwork and that the institution aims to provide world class healthcare facilities to the people of the province at their doorstep.

Dean PIC, Prof Shahkar Ahmad Shah, termed the successful surgery another major achievement for the institution and said preparations are also underway to launch a heart transplant programme at the PIC in near future.
