KARACHI: The Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) on Sunday organised a demonstration in Ibrahim Hyderi, calling for an equitable transition to a fossil-free future.

Addressing the demonstration, PFF’s senior vice chairperson Fatima Majeed stated that thousands were also participating in similar protests across India, Bangladesh, Nepal and the Philippines, making it part of a global mobilisation.

Fatima Majeed further remarked that the current energy crisis had demonstrated that dependence on fossil fuels must be dismantled, as it has shackled Asia’s economies to the extraction of coal, oil and gas.

“There can be no pathway to global peace, stability and climate justice as long as our energy supply remains tied to the volatility of fossil fuels,” she said.

Fisherfolk in Pakistan and other parts of Asia are heavily reliant on fossil fuels; Pakistani fishermen are awaiting cheaper diesel for their boats.

In Pakistan, which was the first country to declare a national energy emergency a month ago, hundreds gathered in fishing villages, noting that when fuel prices rise, ordinary Pakistanis bear the brunt, as essential goods become more expensive, workers’ purchasing power diminishes, family budgets are strained, and the burden on women increases.

“A swift, fair, and just transition away from fossil fuels is not merely a climate policy issue; it is crucial for the welfare and survival of our people,” said PFF’s Information Secretary Ayoub Shan.

PFF’s Karachi Secretary, Talib Kachhi, said they had gathered to ensure that their demands are recognised both nationally and globally.

“International collaboration is essential for a worldwide transition, and a fair and just phase-out of fossil fuels cannot occur without wealthier nations fulfilling their responsibilities, including providing trillions in public, grant-based and unconditional climate financing,” he said.
