SAHIWAL, June 30: Seven people, including a woman and her minor son, were killed in rain-related incidents in different parts of the district on Friday.

Five people were killed and another eight hurt when kutcha houses collapsed owing to torrential rain coupled with strong wind in Kauray Shah village.

Akbar, Rangshah and Jannat Bibi died instantly while Shazia and Karamat succumbed to injuries in hospital. Iqbal, Khadim Hussain, Niamat, Habibullah, Sabira, Sakeena, Imtiaz Begum and Sooban Bibi were admitted to hospital where the condition of four of them was serious.

Lightening claimed the lives of Sajida and her son Shafiq (4) in Bhojian village.

Uprooted trees fell on electricity lines, suspending power supply to Farid Town, Scheme No 3 and district courts. While Kot Khadim Ali, Fateh Sher Colony, Chak 72/4-R, Jinnah Street and Goal Chakkar localities had been without electricity for some eight hours.

Almost all roads and streets were awash with rainwater due to faulty sewer system. Sadar Bazaar, Pakpattan Bazaar, Deepalpur Bazaar, Pull Bazaar and Church Road were under one to two feet of rainwater.

Low-lying areas, including Shareef Colony, Bhutto Nagar, Kot Farid Khan and Kot Khadim Ali Shah, are completely surrounded by rainwater while the tehsil council has made no arrangements for its drainage.

POs HELD: Civil Lines police on Friday claimed to have arrested two POs for their alleged involvement in the killing of the PML district vice-president and former Zila Council member.

Accused Fakhar Jahan, son of a retired DSP, and his accomplice Mazhari on April 18 had shot dead PML leader Sardar Muhammad Ali Gadhi when he was coming out of a cellular company office at Fiveways Chowk. Firing also resulted in injuries to bank manager Mehr Bashir Ahmed, who is still nursing his injuries at a hospital.

A case had been registered against accused Fakhar Jahan, Mazhari and Amir Lashari.

Accused Lashari had managed to get his bail from a local court on May 10. On Friday, the police arrested the two accused after the rejection of their pre-arrest bail by a local court.
