RAWALPINDI: Four people have been booked by the police on the charges of threatening a polio vaccination team after the team encountered strong resistance from a family in Sadiqabad on Wednesday.

However, no arrests have been made by the police so far. Rana Faraz, health inspector, registered an FIR with the Sadiqabad police, saying that he along with a polio vaccination team was visiting Muslim Town on Wednesday to administer polio drops to children.

He said they sought permission from the inmates of a house for giving polio drops to children. When the polio team walked inside the house, Gul Hassan, Mohammad Gul and two other persons misbehaved with the team, offered resistance and started making videos of the female staff.

He said that the suspects also used abusive language against the polio vaccination team and refused to administer polio drops to children. The inmates allegedly threatened the polio vaccination team of dire consequences and also created panic among the residents of the area.

The complainant said that due to their attitude, there was an apprehension about the spread of poliovirus in the area. More than 900 police personnel have been deployed to ensure security for the polio vaccination teams during the three-day anti-polio campaign launched on Monday.

Police sources said that a special security plan had been chalked out to ensure the safety of the vaccination teams. According to the security plan, 688 police teams from 30 police stations were performing security duty with the polio teams. There are 352 transit and 231 fixed centres set up under National Immunization Day (NID). Foolproof security arrangements have been made for the security of the polio teams, police said.
