ISLAMABAD: Technicians and regulators from Asia and Africa began a month-long inter-regional training course on basic safety in nuclear power plants (BPTC) at the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) in Islamabad on Friday.

The training programme underscores Pakistan’s growing role in promoting nuclear safety and international cooperation.

The course, a flagship training programme of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), provides a comprehensive understanding of nuclear safety principles and their application in nuclear power plants and research reactors. It includes structured modules, case studies, and interactive sessions.

The Basic Professional Training Course on Nuclear Safety (BPTC) is intended to provide a broad overview of safety concepts and their application to the design and operation of nuclear power plants and research reactors.

Its nature and scope are primarily oriented towards junior professionals recently involved in nuclear safety-related activities. It is also suitable for highly specialised professionals who lack a broader view of nuclear safety.

Speaking at the inauguration of the course, PNRA Member (Corporate) Mohammad Qayyum emphasised Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining high standards of nuclear safety and strengthening regulatory capacity through international cooperation.
