• Landslides in Hazara, Shangla, Waziristan block several routes

ABBOTTABAD/BANNU: As torrential rainfall continues to wreak havoc in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for the second consecutive day on Monday, 11 more people lost their lives, including five in Abbottabad, and 18 sustained injuries due to the downpour, which flooded neighbourhoods and blocked roads across the province.

The KP Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said that five members of a family were killed and four were injured in Havelian tehsil, Abbottabad, in the small hours of Monday. They died in a roof-collapse incident. A Wapda employee was killed after a tree fell on him in the same tehsil. Rescue 1122 said a motorcyclist, who was a Wapda lineman, was on his way to duty when a tree fell on him due to strong winds on Lora Link Road. The accident was so sudden and severe that he died on the spot and was buried under the tree, it added.

Separately, Bannu reported two deaths, taking the two-day toll to eight. In the district, two roof-collapse incidents left as many children dead and one woman and a child injured. Likewise, two children were killed after a roof collapse in an area along the Bilitang Kot Road in the Kohat district. A woman and four children were injured.

The PDMA said that a house collapse in Chalonai tehsil of Battagram left a person dead and another wounded. Similarly, two persons were injured in Bajaur and five in the Peshawar district.

Low-level flooding in Swat

Downpour in the plains and highlands of Swat, which began on Sunday night and continued into Monday, swelled several streams, resulting in flooding at various points. A stream flowing through the centre of Mingora surged once again, raising concerns among residents living near rainwater drains and waterways.

A massive avalanche, on the other hand, blocked the road between Kalam and Mahodand Lake, leaving hundreds of tourist vehicles stranded on both sides. A spokesperson for the Upper Swat Development Authority, Saeedur Rehman, said that heavy machinery had been deployed to clear the debris and that efforts were underway to reopen the road for traffic.

Moreover, heavy rain continued to lash parts of Shangla for a second consecutive day, triggering landslides and blocking key roads, including the main Bisham-Swat road at multiple points, officials said on Monday. Rainfall was reported in Alpuri, Bisham, Puran, Shahpur, Chakesar and adjoining areas.

Landslides in Hazara

The upper parts of Hazara Division received the heaviest dowpour of the outgoing winter season, making the weather chilly once again. The rain continued intermittently throughout the day in Mansehra, Torghar, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan, and Kolai-Palas districts. The rainwater flooded roads and streets and entered houses and shops in some parts of the division. The link roads connecting dozens of villages to the Karakoram Highway and the Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhad Road were blocked due to landslides.

Meanwhile, a fresh spell of torrential rains over the past two days led to an unusual surge in water flow in the Panjkora River; no loss of life or property was reported in Lower Dir or Upper Dir.

Snowfall was also reported in the mountainous areas of Upper Dir, including Lowari Top, Kumrat Valley, Doog Dara, Jahaz Banda and Badgoai Top, as well as Bin Shahi Top and Kalpani Maidan Top in Lower Dir.

Continuous rainfall over the past two days triggered multiple landslides in different areas of South Waziristan Lower, forcing the closure of the Wana-Gomal Zam Road for the second consecutive day, officials said. The road blockade suspended traffic on both sides, causing severe difficulties for commuters and local residents.

The district administration said heavy machinery has been deployed to clear the mud and rocks from the road. Work has been ongoing for the past two days to restore traffic flow.

Deputy Commissioner Musarrat Zaman told Dawn that the district administration was closely monitoring the situation and utilising all available resources to reopen the road. “Our teams are working round the clock to clear the road. If weather conditions remain favourable, we hope to restore traffic on the Wana-Gomal Zam Road soon,” she said. In the meantime, traffic had been diverted to the alternate Wana-Jandola Road.

Traffic on the Zhob-Dera Ismail Khan highway had been fully restored at the Gundi Ashiq point.

According to the Met department, Cherat received 67mm of rain over the past 24 hours. Bannu received 45mm of rain, Dir Upper 43, Dir Lower 38 and Peshawar 39.

The Met department predicted widespread rain with snowfall on Tuesday across KP.

Manzoor Ali in Peshawar, AK Wazir in South Waziristan Lower, Umar Bacha in Shangla, Haleem Asad in Lower Dir, Nisar Ahmed Khan in Mansehra, Fazal Khaliq in Swat, Abdul Sami Paracha in Kohat and Muhammad Irfan Mughal in Dera Ismail Khan also contributed to this report
