GUJRANWALA, June 24: The Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) has requested the Punjab government to grant Rs760 million for replacing old pipes, it is learnt here.
The provincial housing department has convened a meeting of DCO, the district nazim and Wasa managing-director in Lahore on Monday (tomorrow) to prepare a summary to be forwarded to the chief minister for approval in this regard.
Sources said citizens were protesting against Wasa for not supplying clean drinking water, blaming the agency for outbreak of hepatitis and gastroenteritis.
They said Wasa managing-director Muhammad Bashir Tarar had sent a memorandum to the Punjab government requesting to provide a grant of Rs760 million for replacing the old water supply lines.
DEATH WARRANTS: The local anti-terrorism court No 1 on Saturday issued death warrants for a condemned prisoner involved in a double murder case and fixed July 13 for his execution.
According to the prosecution, Tausif had kidnapped Zaigam Ali and Muazzam Ali from Kamoki and demanded ransom worth Rs200,000 for their release. Later, he had killed them.
The court handed down death sentence to him. The Lahore High Court and the Supreme Court upheld the decision of the lower court while the president had rejected his appeal.
Meanwhile, the court continued hearing of the Sialkot jail case and rejected the plea of complainant advocate Ghulam Abass Bukhari, father of slain judge Shehr Yar Bukhari, for summoning the then LHC registrar. The court adjourned the case till Friday.
DEATH AWARDED: A local court handed down death sentence to one Ismatullah and life term to Khawer Rashid in a murder case here on Saturday and ordered payment of Rs100,000 compensation to heirs of the deceased.
According to the prosecution, the convicts had killed Qasim on offering resistance during a dacoity bid in Saddar area on April 20, 2005.
The Gepco has urged its consumers to clear all their outstanding dues till June 30, otherwise their connections would be severed.
