SAHIWAL, June 18: Civil Lines police registered a case against a sub-inspector, who had escaped with handcuffs on Saturday, and his 25 accomplices for getting him released from the custody of police guards.
Five police guards — Nazeer Ahmed, Irshad Hussain, Gulzar Ahmed, Muhammad Sharif and Allah Ditta — escorting the sub-inspector were also booked.
A local court had handed down 25-year hard jail each to SI Rana Baqir Ali and constables Muhammad Ashiq and Saeed Ahmed for killing youth Imtiaz Joshi, the son of a labourer, on Aug 28, 2002.
Following the verdict when guards were escorting convicts, 25 accomplices of the SI got him released from their custody. Seizing an opportunity, constable Muhammad Ashiq also managed to slip away while the attempt to escape of other constable was foiled by guards.
FOUR DIE: Four people died of hepatitis during the last 24 hours at the local DHQ Hospital.
Bank officer Muhammad Aslam of Farid Town, prayer leader Muhammad Saleem of Chak 1/EB, Arshad (47) of Chak 184/9-L and Muhammad Sharif (60) of Chak 86/6-R were admitted to hospital, but they could not survive.
While six more hepatitis patients — Sarfraz, Rabia, Taani, Fakhara, Asia and Niamat Ali — were admitted to hospital. They all belong to Farid Town, Sharif Colony, Nai Abadi and Gulistan Colony, where pipes supplying potable water have become rusty, causing water-borne disease among residents.
The DHQ Hospital medical superintendent reiterated his complaint about the non-availability of medicines.
BREACH: A large tract of the cultivated area was flooded after a 25-feet wide breach developed in minor 5-L on Saturday night near Chak 48/12-L.
The irrigation authorities asked the Yousafwala police to register a case against two farmers for causing the breach to irrigate their 50 acres of land. Initially, the accused farmers, reportedly belong to the ruling PML, tried to plug the breach but it developed further.
Villagers informed the irrigation staff who rushed to the spot and plugged the breach after a struggle of some four hours.
