LAHORE: The Lahore Zoo is carrying out breeding of exotic parrots for the first time at its own hatchery.
Speaking to Dawn, Lahore Zoo Director Dr Ghulam Rasool says these parrots which were purchased in 2024-25 were now laying eggs and more modern incubators were being installed for their breeding.
Giving details, he says the vibrant canopy of Lahore Zoo is currently echoing with the calls of a successful spring as the annual breeding season reaches its peak.
“This year marks a significant milestone for the zoo’s avian conservation programne, with several high-priority species — including the Eclectus parrot, Cockatoos, Monk parrot and the Sun Conure, and Alexandrine parakeet — entering their laying cycle.
According to Dr Ghulam Rasool, to safeguard this new generation, the zoo has moved beyond traditional nesting. Recognising the delicate nature of these species, wildlife experts have transitioned fertile eggs into a high-precision controlled environment.
This shift to artificial incubation minimises the risks of breakage or abandonment, ensuring that environmental variables like humidity and temperature remain constant to maximise hatch rates.
The success of this season is further bolstered by a major infrastructure upgrade. The Lahore Zoo is currently finalising a hatchery, designed to rival international standards. This modern hub features imported incubators, technology to mimic the exact physiological conditions provided by parent birds, a dedicated nursery, designed specifically for the first critical weeks of a chick’s life and modern brooders for consistent warmth and airflow.
The officials claim that by refining these breeding protocols, Lahore Zoo is positioning itself as a leader in captive breeding.
