SWAT: The 17th death anniversary of journalist Musa Khankhel was observed with solemnity and respect at the Swat Press Club here the other day.

A prayer ceremony was organised to commemorate his sacrifice, attended by members of the journalist community, senior government officials, and representatives from various segments of society.

Speaking at the ceremony, Malakand division commissioner Masood Ahmed stated that the ‘durable peace’ presently prevailing in Swat was the outcome of immense and collective sacrifices. He noted that security forces, civilians, and various stakeholders rendered invaluable sacrifices for the restoration of peace in the region.

Malakand Deputy Inspector General Syed Fida Hassan Shah paid tribute to Musa Khankhel, stating that his sacrifice for peace and responsible journalism would always be remembered.

In a separate message, he reiterated that peace in Swat was the result of numerous sacrifices made by security personnel and civilians alike.

Senior journalist Dr Mehboob Ali, while addressing the gathering, called upon the government to fulfill the commitments made to the family of the late journalist. He expressed concern that those responsible for Khankhel’s murder had yet to be apprehended and stressed the need for serious and effective measures to ensure justice to the family.

Swat Press Club Chairman Fazal Rahim Khan and general secretary Adnan Khan urged Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani to honour his commitment of providing a residential plot in Islamabad to the bereaved family. He stated that Musa Khankhel sacrificed his life in pursuit of truth and peace, and it was the government’s obligation to fulfill the promises made to his family.

Fazal Rahim also appealed to Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshall Syed Asim Munir to play a role in ensuring the implementation of the commitment made to the martyr’s mother.

Swat Union of Journalists President Shehzad Alam stated that the peace restored in Swat was the result of sacrifices made by journalists and other segments of society.

Musa Khankhel was abducted and later killed on February 18, 2009, during a peace rally in Matta. His brother, Isa Khankhel, said the promise made by the senate chairman regarding the allotment of a plot in Islamabad remains unfulfilled.
