CHARSADDA: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has expressed serious concerns over the country’s political and security situation, stating that the parliamentary security committee should be activated to formulate national-level policies.

He expressed these views while speaking to the media at the residence of former MNA and JUI-F leader Maulana Gohar Shah here on Wednesday.

Mr Rehman said that instead of making decisions behind closed doors, open consultations should take place on the parliamentary forum. According to him, without genuine democracy and a strong parliament, neither law and order nor economic stability could be achieved.

He alleged that the current government came into power as a result of rigging, and was therefore unsuccessful; adding that public trust in parliament had eroded.

Speaking about the recent wave of terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he said that the provincial government lacked authority and that real decision-making powers rested with the federal government and the establishment. He further stated that the United States had historically played a destabilising role in Afghanistan and the region, and therefore Pakistan should make independent decisions based on its own national interests.

He added that no clear national policy was visible and that decisions were being made by only a few individuals. According to him, governance was being carried out by sidelining parliament, which is harmful to the country.

Mr Rehman stressed that fair elections and a genuine democratic process were essential for national unity and stability. He said that wrong decisions would be opposed, while correct decisions would be supported. He emphasised the urgent need for serious national dialogue and consensus to steer the country out of the current crises.
