Sweden beat Paraguay 1-0

Published June 16, 2006

BERLIN, June 15: Fredrik Ljungberg scored with a header in the 89th minute on Thursday, giving Sweden a 1-0 win over Paraguay in Group B. Sweden dominated the match and substitute striker Marcus Allback nearly scored another in the 59th minute but Danis Caniza made a flying goal line clearance. It was a frustrating night for Sweden, which was held to a 0-0 draw by Trinidad and Tobago in its opener.

Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was taken off at halftime after missing several chances and Allback immediately added extra speed and support for Henrik Larsson and Ljungberg.

With England already qualified after beating Trinidad 2-0 earlier Thursday, all three remaining teams can still qualify.—AP
