MANSEHRA: The upper parts of Hazara division received snowfall on Tuesday while heavy rain lashed low lying urban areas, turning the weather chilly.

The snowfall, which began in the morning, continued intermittently throughout the day. High-altitude areas of the division, including Kaghan, Siren and Konsh valleys in Mansehra, and Kandia and Spat valleys in Kohistan, received a fresh spell of snow.

The link roads in remote parts of Mansehra and other areas of the division, which were blocked during the heaviest snowfall in mid-January, could not be cleared, adding to miseries of locals.

People in remote areas of Mansehra, Torghar, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan and Kolai-Palas continue to face hardships as electricity, which was suspended due to grounding of pylons and poles, has yet to be restored.

Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhad (MNJ) Road, which had been cleared up to Kagha by National Highway Authority following last month’s snowfall, was once again hit as landslides and fresh snowfall blocked it at several points. The artery connecting MNJ Road with tourist resort of Shogran was also blocked due to fresh snowfall.

A police department spokesperson told journalists that visitors intending to travel to the high-altitude tourist resort of Shogran were stopped and not allowed to proceed during the snowfall, as the steep road connecting it with MNJ Road became dangerous and slippery in such conditions.

Meanwhile, Mansehra, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan, Kolai-Palas and Torghar districts received heavy rainfall. The rain, which started in the early hours, continued intermittently throughout the day.

Police department asked tourists and locals to avoid travelling to high-altitude areas during inclement weather and snowfall.

In Abbottabad, temperature dropped below freezing point due to second spell of snowfall and continuous rain in Thandiyani, Nathiagali, Ayubia and other hilly areas of the district.

Abbottabad-Muree Road was closed to all sorts of traffic after 5pm as per decision of district administration.

Six to nine inches of snow was reported in upper areas of Galiyat. The district administration and other relevant departments were busy in clearing the snow.

Meanwhile, work is under way on rehabilitation of road in Galiyat under the supervision of the Abbottabad administration. The district administration has announced that Barian-Nathiagali Road will be closed to traffic in Tohidabad and other areas after 5pm due to threat of landslides and avalanches. The road from Abbottabad to Nathiagali will remain open to traffic.

The administration has advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and take precautionary measures while travelling in Galiyat.
