ISLAMABAD, June 14: The Indus River System Authority (Irsa) on Wednesday enhanced the cut in the provinces’ water share to 19 per cent owing to an ‘excessive drop in the inflows’, an announcement said.

Irsa said the morning gauges on Wednesday reported that the inflows were declining constantly. “Therefore, Irsa has decided to further reduce Tarbela outflows by 15,000 cusec,” it said.

Under the new adjustment Sindh would get 104,000 cusec; Punjab 100,000 cusec; Balochistan 12,000 cusec; and the NWFP 3,000. “The shortfall for Punjab and Sindh has now increased to 19 per cent each.”

Irsa said the adjustments were also made on Tuesday owing to the recent drop in the inflows. It said the adjustments were being made only under unavoidable circumstances but equity would be maintained amongst all the provinces.

It said the situation concerning drop in flows viz-a-viz climatic change in the catchment areas were being monitored on a daily basis by Irsa to make the adjustments accordingly.
